Hawaii Elopement: 5 Best Places to Elope on the Big Island
As a Hawaii elopement photographer, one of my favorite places to capture elopements is on the Big Island. I used to live on the Big Island and it will always hold a special place in my heart! This island has some of the most scenic locations and has something to offer every couple that’s considering eloping in Hawaii! Whether you’re looking to say “I do” on a white sand beach, in front of a jaw-dropping waterfall, or along a scenic rocky cliff - there are so many amazing places to elope on the Big Island!

Kulaniapia Falls
Calling all waterfall-obsessed brides and grooms: if you’re looking for a dreamy and intimate place to tie the knot, Kulaniapia Falls is just the spot for you! This is one of my favorite Big Island elopement locations and is a great choice for a couple who’s looking for a truly unique place away from the beach and the sand.
Located in North Hilo, Kulaniapia Falls is the largest accessible private waterfall in Hawaii and makes the perfect backdrop for any couple considering eloping in Hawaii. Situated on 42 acres of land, this property is surrounded by four waterfalls, a bamboo garden, and an eco-friendly sustainable inn for the newlyweds to stay overnight.
This waterfall is also a must for anyone planning an adventure elopement in Hawaii! Thrill-seeking couples can go paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming on the grounds. If that’s too tame for you, you’re also able to go rappelling off of the 120-foot waterfall for the experience of a lifetime!
Please note: When tying the knot at this Hawaii elopement location, packages start at $750 for the use of the property. Up to 10 guests are allowed; this includes the couple, the photographer, and the officiant.
Kekaha Kai State Park
Looking for a picture-perfect location to exchange your vows? Kekaha Kai State Park is the place for you when planning your Big Island elopement! This state park is filled with postcard-worthy beaches, lava rocks, and intense turquoise water. Talk about a diverse landscape! This is an ideal spot for any couple who is looking for places to elope on the Big Island and wants options.
Kekaha Kai State Park is close to town and located a few miles north of Kona Airport. It’s the perfect spot if you or your guests want to stay in town and don’t want to venture too far. It’s also an ideal option if you have any elderly guests attending your wedding. This Hawaii elopement location stretches along the Kona coast and has several gorgeous beaches. Some areas require a bit of off-roading and a short trek to get there! But, I promise you, it'll be worth it when you see the stunning stretch of white sand beach in front of you!
For couples who are planning an adventure elopement in Hawaii, snorkeling off the coast is a great option. Waipi’o Valley
Of all the places to elope in Hawaii, this one might be the most remote! Waipi’o Valley is one of the Big Island’s hidden gems and one of its best-kept secrets. Whether you’re looking to tie the knot along the cliffside or are up for the challenge of hiking to the bottom, this remote destination takes the prize as one of my favorite places to elope on the Big Island.
Waipi’o Valley is located in the Hamakua District and was once the home of early Hawaiian kings! The Waipi’o Valley Lookout is one of my top favorite places to elope on the Big Island and for a very good reason! Imagine saying “I do” while looking out at an incredible view of endless lush green hillsides and watching the waves crash along the black sand beach below. Couples looking to elope at Waipi’o Valley can stay overnight at Hale Kukui Orchard and Resort and hold their ceremony here! This is truly one of the best places to elope in Hawaii!
For those couples who are up for a challenge and looking to get married in the valley, a 6.5-mile hike down to the bottom is just the thing for you! This is not for the faint of heart, but is a great option for those who are looking to plan an adventure elopement in Hawaii and want a truly unique experience! Take in the 2000-foot tall seawall, countless waterfalls, a black sand beach, and wild horses roaming about on your big day.
Please note: the road to get down into the Waipi’o Valley is closed for repairs as of 2024. Please check for road closures before planning your elopement here. A special use permit is required to marry at one of the more elusive places to elope on the Big Island.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park
Have you ever wanted to get married on an active volcano? If so, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is calling your name! This sacred place has a diverse landscape, making it one of the best places to elope on the Big Island! Spanning from sea level to 13,680 feet, this breathtaking park is an amazing place to plan your Big Island elopement - especially if you want to get out and explore.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park isn’t just about volcanoes (although, I know it’s definitely the draw)! This Hawaii elopement location is overflowing with beauty and scenic trails, making it the perfect place to capture your day. From lush rain forests and lava caves to the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach - this is one of those locations that has something for everyone

Mauna Kea Beach
If you’ve been looking for a dreamy beach to get married on, look no further than Mauna Kea Beach! This beach has been named one of Hawaii’s best beaches and there’s no question why. Featuring beautiful white sand and crystal-clear blue water, this popular beach is another one of my top places to elope on the Big Island!
Located next to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is this breathtaking crescent-shaped beach. Lined with palm trees and coconut trees, it has just what you’ve been looking for to host your Big Island elopement! If you’re looking to escape the crowds and have the beach all to yourselves, this is an easy choice for a sunrise ceremony.
Please note: a permit costs $50 to have your wedding here. Your application must be submitted at least 45 days in advance to elope here! Due to its popularity, there’s limited parking and there's a $20 parking fee.
